yield는 단순히 ‘굴복하다’와는 의미가 다른다. surrender(굴복하다)에는 왜 ‘산출량’의 뜻이 없는 것일까? 그것은  바로 yield는 원래 ‘패배하다’ 보다는 ‘남에게 내주다’의 의미가 중심 이미지로 잡혀 있기 때문이다.
