Dic: invest, one of its verbal usages revisited

2(a). To spend or devote for future advantage or benefit:

2(b). To devote morally or psychologically, as to a purpose; commit:

3. ~ sth in sth/in doing sth: to spend time, energy, effort, etc. on sth that you think is good or useful.
  • She had invested all her adult life in the relationship.
