A sentence

which uses on behalf of:

  • A key feature in many games is the attempt on behalf of players to build credibility.

The image projected by the writer may be something like this:
  • Players in games attempt to build credibility on their behalf. That is a key feature in many games.

In view of various ways of defining the usages of on behalf of, it seems to me that the first sentence can be paraphrased as following:
  • A key feature in many games is the attempt on the part of players to build credibility for their own sake.
Am I right? A bit off the target? Does anybody have any advice on this matter?

To see a bit wider context let me review the full paragraph:
A key feature in many games is the attempt on behalf of players to build credibility. You are credible if you can expected to keep your promises and carry out your threats. But you cannot gain credibility simply by making promises. Credibility must be consistent with the incentives of the game.
