Most recent trade in a particular security. Not to be confused with the final transaction in a trading session, called the Closing Sale.
The last sale is the point of reference for two SEC(Securities and Exchange Commission) rules:
- On a national exchange, no Short Sale may be made below the price of the last regular sale.
- No short sale may be made at the same price as the last sale unless the last sale was at a price higher than the preceding different price. Plus Tick, Minus Tick, Zero Minus Tick and Zero Plus Tick used in this connection, refer to the last sale.
