To shorten the odds on something happening means to make it more likely to happen. 

To lengthen the odds means to make it less likely to happen. 

You can also say that the odds shorten or lengthen.

    ex) His reception there shortened the odds that he might be the next Tory leader

    ex) From a risk perspective, bonds and T-bills give you increasingly short odds after only a few years.

         위험 관점에서 보면, 채권과 재무부 단기증권은 보유기간이 단 몇 년만 지나도 위험이 커지고 또 시간이 갈수록 그 위험은 더욱 커진다.
