앞서 적어봤던 게시물(natural superiors)에서 번역 중 만났던 《공산당선언》 인용문을 살펴봤다. 그 서너 문단 뒤에도 역시 같은 저서의 인용문이 나온다.
All fixed, fast-frozen relations, with their train of ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions, are swept away, all new-formed ones become antiquated before they can ossify. All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind.이 구절을 만났을 때 "solid"의 어감이 오질 않았다. 그리고 이 인용문의 표현들이 거의 다 추상적인 어의여서 무슨 맥락에서 나온 말인지 감을 잡기 어려웠다. 물론, 이 구절을 인용한 저자는 도입 문구를 다음과 같이 적어줬다. "자본주의는 해방에 대한 열망이 가시적인 보상에 굴복하도록 만드는 각종 장치들을 시스템 차원에서 활용한다. 무엇이든 굴복시켜버리는 자본주의의 위력을 지적하는 유명한 구절에서 맑스는 이렇게 천명했다." 이걸 봐도, 인용문 내의 추상적 표현들이 가리키는 의미가 쉽게 다가오지 않는다. 할 수 없이 《공산당선언》의 영문 번역문을 찾아 보니, 이 구절 바로 앞에 실마리를 주는 구절들이 이렇게 쭉 깔려 있었다.

즉 "정성들여 오랫동안(carefully and slowly)" 이어진 것으로 "도덕적으로 합당하고(respectable)", "믿고 의지할 만한(reliable)" 것이라는 의미가 "solid"에 담겨 있다고 보면 해당 문맥과 잘 어울린다. 그렇게 보면, "solid"와 "melts into the air", 또 "holy"와 "profaned"가 각각 대구를 잘 이룬다는 것도 눈에 들어온다. 다음은 위 구절을 옮긴 번역문이다.
유구하게 이어오던 고정관념이나 견해들과 더불어, 견고하게 자리 잡고 있던 모든 관계들이 해체된다. 또 새로 생긴 관계들마저 충분히 뿌리내리기도 전에 퇴물이 되어 사라진다. 견실했던 모든 것들이 허공 속 연무처럼 녹아 없어지고, 신성했던 모든 것들은 비천한 속물로 전락한다. 마침내 인간이 내몰리는 눈앞의 현실은 이제 그 맨몸의 오감과 생존의 현실적 조건, 그리고 그 족속과의 관계뿐이다.
