last sale

Most recent trade in a particular security. Not to be confused with the final transaction in a trading session, called the Closing Sale.

The last sale is the point of reference for two SEC(Securities and Exchange Commission) rules:

1. On a national exchange, no Short Sale may be made below the price of the last regular sale.
2. No short sale may be made at the same price as the last sale unless the last sale was at a price higher than the preceding different price. Plus Tick, Minus Tick, Zero Minus Tick and Zero Plus Tick used in this connection, refer to the last sale.
